Tivall Slicing Sausage

slicing-sausage website picI’ve included this as my very fussy daughter loves this stuff and a whole sausage can disappear in a day in our house. Hornett Wholefoods sells a 300g sausage for £3.17, but for 18th and 19th February, you can buy it for £2.85. It’s a frozen item that you need to defrost before you use it – Miss Hornett Wholefoods eats it sliced on toast. Here’s a recipe:

Savoury Sausage Tartlets

Serve tarts warm or cold with salad. Ideal for packed lunches. (Makes 6)

1x250g packed fresh ready to use shortcrust pastry
2 tbsp sunflower oil
1 medium onion, chopped
150g Tivall Vegetarian Slicing Sausage, diced
125g broccoli florets, blanched
50g Cheddar cheese, grated
2 eggs, size 3
225ml milk
salt and pepper

  1. Divide pastry into six and use to line six 10cm tartlet tins, placing on baking sheet.
  2. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry onion until soft and turning golden. Drain on absorbent kitchen paper and mix with diced slicing sausage. Divide between pastry tartlets. Add broccoli and sprinkle over cheese.
  3. Beat eggs with milk and seasoning and pour into pastry cases. Cook at 200°C/400°F/Mark 6 for about 25-30 minutes until golden. If preferred line 24cm flan tin with pastry and increase cooking time by 5-10 minutes.

Clipper Teas is a British company and was started in 1984 by Mike and Lorraine Brehme. Because of Mike and Lorraine’s guiding principles, Clipper became involved with the Fairtrade Foundation in its earliest stages and policy development. They launched their very first Fairtrade tea in 1994 and in 2015, they are still the UK’s No 1 Fairtrade Tea Company. Theirs was the first Green Tea brand available in UK supermarkets and they continue to work with tea and coffee producers to ensure that as much of their product is Fairtrade as possible.

Clipper tea tents display 2The Green Tea really is a good cuppa. There’s no bitterness, even at the end of the mug – I leave the tent in the cup while drinking it so the flavour gets stronger. It’s a lovely, subtle flavour that isn’t at all overpowering like some cheaper brands.

From the Clipper website:

“Our tea tents are busting with Clipper loose-leaf tea and blended with fruit & herbs to give you the best of both worlds; the quality and taste of the whole leaf, combined with the convenience of a teabag.

“Our magic tea tents give the loose-leaf tea and real bits of fruit & herb bags of room to move around the cup ensuring the liveliest flavour.

“Choose from our fragrant and Fairtrade green tea range and our organic fruit & herb range, all as deliciously tempting as the next.

Clipper tea tents“Our Blueberry & Elderberry tea tents offer a fresh and summery taste, bursting with the fruity flavours of ripe blueberries and elderberries. It’s juicy, rich and remarkable fruity.

“Invigorating, deliciously fragrant and fruity, our Apple & Rhubarb infusion is reminiscent of an English Garden. Simply pour hot water, allow to infuse, close your eyes and drift away.

Clipper tea tents 2“For a cup of remarkable elegance and clarity, try our Pure Green Tea. A large leaf, flowery, orange pekoe, green tea that delivers a delicious crisp, fragrant yet mellow flavour.

“Add to this the cooling menthol taste of peppermint, the zesty zing of lemon of the beautifully fruity flavour of strawberry and you have some truly remarkable cups of green tea.”

Fentimans Botanically Brewed soft drinks

Fentimans 48 displayWhat a delicious brew these are! We have six flavours, all at £1.35 for a 275ml bottle. For 16th and 17th February, there’s 10% off all flavours so they now come to £1.21 each. Choose from:

  • Dandelion and Burdock – “Infusions of dandelion leaves and burdock root create the unmistakable taste and aroma of this definitive classic.”
  • Mandarin and Seville Orange Jigger – “’Jigger’ is an old English term for a good measure, which is used when combining the juice of eight mandarins and the zest of Seville orange in every bottle.”
  • Curiosity Cola – “This curiously invigorating recreation of colas from yesteryear is made using infusions of the finest herbal ingredients.”
  • Cherry Tree Cola – “Introducing the world’s first botanically brewed cherry cola”
  • Victorian Lemonade – “With the juice of one and a half lemons in every bottle, for real refreshment our cloudy Victorian Lemonade takes some beating.”
  • Ginger Beer – “A real ginger beer made using the finest Chinese ginger root. Fiery and full of flavour.”

Fentimans 2They’re all gluten-free and vegan and completely lovely. “Botanical brewing is a simple process involving herbs and plant roots. Thomas Fentiman’s original recipe involved milling ginger roots before tumbling them into copper steam jacketed pans and leaving them to bubble and simmer releasing all their flavour. The finest herbs, natural flavourings, sugar, brewer’s yeast and fresh spring water were then added to the liquid which was transferred into wooden vats where it was left to ferment.”

Fentimans 1They certainly are an interesting looking drink before you’ve even opened the bottle. There’s an instruction on some of the flavours to “upend before pouring” – there’s sediment at the bottom where the natural ingredients have settled, like home brew wine and beer! There’s an “ooh!” to be had with your first gulp…

Spelt was praised in the 12th century by St. Hildegarde von Bingen as “the best of grains”.

Biona is a completely organic range of foods for vegetarians and vegans – Hornett Wholefoods carries a number of their products including their delicious vegan Worcester Sauce and three varieties of pressed juice. Anyone coming into the shop will see me ‘modelling’ the Dark Tulip colour darktulip– normally £3.45 a pot but for two days only, you can purchase a pot for just £3.10 with the 10% off. This is a range of super bright hair colours that aren’t tested on animals and are suitable for use by vegetarians and vegans as it doesn’t have any nasty hidden animal-based ingredients. Vego chocolate bar

vego trio centredIt’s Mr Hornett Wholefoods’ birthday today so he’s asked for his new favourite chocolate bar to be featured for a couple of days – I’m happy to oblige, of course.

I added this to the stock after a customer came in and raved about it and it’s easy to see why! It’s a huge bar for £3.25 (£2.92 after 10% off) – it has 5 big chunks of chocolate in the bar, each roughly an inch wide and full of whole hazelnuts. It happily fed 4 of us at home as a pudding, with the kids sharing the last bit while Mr H looked on hungrily!

Some inspiring quotes from the Vego website –

“We only use exclusive high-quality ingredients such as fine Italian hazelnut paste, hazelnut cocoa cream and whole hazelnuts that we blend together in a unique process to create your Vego Whole Hazelnut Chocolate Bar.

“The Vegobar is probably the tastiest chocolate bar in the world, vegan, organic, fairtrade and gluten-free. What more could you ask for?”

vegobar websiteIt’s a German made bar so their website is also in German and they have the following in the original language:

“Der VegoBar ist ein ‘Monsterriegel’”.

I’m going to imagine that means it’s a Monster Bar from the point of view of the size? Anyway, we’re big fans of it and I think you will be too when you buy one! 10% off for Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th February.

happy birthday
