Newbies Goodness 300915Yes, I’m squeezing more new lines into the shop – I keep thinking I’ve run out of space, but I always find room for it! This week we have:

  • Maca Powder (at last!)
  • Vegeset
  • Trek Cocoa Oat Flapjack bars

Maca powderMaca Powder – £6.99 for 100g

I have been waiting and waiting to have this in the shop – it was/is very hard to come by. It’s grown only in the mountains of Peru and the harvest was ruined due to flooding last year so it became hard to come by and very expensive. It’s still a premium product, but so worth it! It’s also known as ‘Peruvian ginseng’ as it’s good for what ails ya – here’s what it can do:

It’s rich in Vitamins B, C and E and provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids. This means it’s good for skin, moods, hormonal balancing and energy levels. It’s especially beneficial for women as it relieves most menstrual symptoms. If you’re feeling like your energy levels are low, try taking a small amount to see if it perks you up!

maca powder and rootStart adding ½ a teaspoon of maca powder to smoothies or juice, and raw desserts for a lift to your day! Don’t cook it as this destroys all the positive effects.

Visit http://www.vegkitchen.com/nutrition/7-top-health-benefits-of-maca for loads more information about maca and a few links to recipes.

Please be advised that, as with all superfoods, results can’t be guaranteed and will vary according to what else you eat and your lifestyle.

VegesetVegeset – £1.80 for 25g

A vegan setting agent for all your sweet and savoury recipes. This is carrageenan in powder form, with instructions on how to use and a recipe for Panna Cotta on the back. An essential in every vegetarian and vegan kitchen store cupboard, it sets clear and is flavourless so it can be used for all sorts of jelly-based recipes.

Trek Cocoa OatTrek Cocoa Oat Flapjacks -£1.20 for 50g

Useful for those that are active, this gluten and wheat free bar has 9g of protein in it! Another customer recommendation, these are vegan too. Pop one in your bag or pocket for a healthy snack on the go!

Kids cough medicine Echinacea tabletsEchinacea tablets – £8.65 for 120 tablets

Echinacea is a natural remedy for colds and flu – it works to support the immune system and is an anti-inflammatory agent.

Nelson’s Kids’ natural cough medicine – £4.25 for 150ml

This is an entirely natural cough medicine, with Bryonia, honey and lemon juice to give relief to little ones over 12 months. Bryonia is the root of the Bryony plant and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Violife herbs cream cheeseViolife Cheese Spread with herbs – £2.89 for 200g

I think I could actually just fill the fridge with Violife and Replete Flatbreads, to be honest. There are 5 flavours of Violife and I chose the one most popular at Hornett Towers. It’s a lovely mild flavour and really creamy – it’s hard to believe it’s vegan!

Angelic offers all sorts of sweet and savoury biscuits in lovely modern packaging. They’re made with natural ingredients and there’s no difference in taste between these and a ‘traditional’ ginger biscuit, which is something that can also be said for the Prewett’s Milk Chocolate Digestives (my daughter and I tested this extensively…).

Big Oz is an organic brand offering a wide range of gluten-free products. This is a blend of brown rice, buckwheat and millet, with absolutely no other ingredients.

WP_20150908_09_02_32_Pro[1]Frozen products

Fry’s Mince and Chicken style Strips – £3.13 each

My daughter is very fussy and went to a Vegan Summer Camp this year. I asked her to let me know what products she liked so I could buy them at home for us (we’re a vegetarian household transitioning to vegan, fingers crossed!). She was so keen on these, she’s insisted we have them in the shop! We had the chicken strips with peppers, onions and tomatoes in wraps for tea last night and they really are lovely. Highly recommended by a fussy 15 year old!

Clive’s Pies – Potato and Cheese Pasty £2.35, Creamy Mushroom Pie £2.65

I’ve had many requests for Clive’s Pies in the last few months and I’m pleased to say that I’ve finally got room in the freezer for two flavours! The mushroom pie is vegan, the pasty is vegetarian. These are also organic and handmade. (I’ve just looked at the website – I’m now very hungry…).

WP_20150908_08_59_15_Pro[1]Beautiful chocolate from The Raw Chocolate Company

My love affair with this brand of chocolate started not long after we opened when a regular customer ordered a bar of Vanoffe. I like to try most things that come in the shop (well, lots of people ask for my opinion on the food I sell, and I have to be honest…) and I was blown away by how delicious this bar is! It really is the best chocolate I’ve ever tasted and because it’s raw, it’s almost good for you as it retains all the natural goodness of cacao. It’s sugar free as it’s sweetened by lucuma powder and made with love. Can you tell that I really like this chocolate? I don’t think I’ve really been too clear about that! Anyway, their products were given to the kids at the Vegan Summer Camp my daughter was at and she also raved about it. After being sent samples by the extremely generous chaps at Raw Choc Co, I was convinced to add a few more lines, so here they are:

  • Vanoffe Dark bar, £1.99 – as creamy as Vanoffe but with the bitter edge of dark chocolate.
  • Raw Chocolate Covered Goji Berries, £1.49 – it’s fruit so it’s good for you. Really.
  • Raw Chocolate Covered Mulberries, £1.49 – again, good for you with a sweet edge.

Buy some – you shan’t regret it!

Of course, we have loads of different delicious food in the shop and we’re adding all the time. I’m starting to wonder where I’m going to put any more things!
