David Haye veganA new item in the shop – you may or may not know that veganism is very popular in fitness and weight lifting these days. This is where Good Hemp Raw Hemp Protein Powder comes in.  It can be mixed with water or milk for a quick restorative drink after a workout or as an energy boost.  It can be added to blended fruit and plant milk for a healthy smoothie.  You can also sprinkle it over yogurt or cereal.  This is completely vegan, Kosher, and gluten and nut free, so it can be enjoyed by everyone!

Why is Protein important?

Pulsin' vanilla barProtein is important for the healthy growth and repair of all our body tissues: our muscles, internal organs and our skin. There is a huge misconception that meat is the best source of protein, but this isn’t true.  There’s also a thought that meat-free sources of protein are hard to come by – also not true.  Tofu, nuts, some seeds, tempeh, seitan and other grains are fantastic sources of protein, so it’s easy to get enough into your diet.  If, however, you exercise on a regular basis, you’ll need more as it’s used to power and restore muscles.

Hemp protein in particular is popular as it has less saturated fat than olive oil and is naturally rich in Omega 3. This is crucial for brain function, skin health, immune system and normal growth and function.

Hemp Seeds OrgThe protein in hemp seeds is also easily digested by our bodies due to its composition which makes it more readily available to the body than animal sources of protein. Some plant sources of protein like soya beans contain enzyme inhibitors which block protein digestion, this can cause adverse effects in some people. These enzymes are not present in hemp.  It offers a more complete and richer source of protein than any other seed, including chia.

As well as hemp protein powder, we’re trialling things like wheatgrass powder, moringa powder and baobab powder.  Why not come into the shop to see the range from Greens Organic?  We have introductory prices and two free gifts with each purchase from the range – a box of 20 Teatulia tea bags in either Black Tea or Earl of Bengal flavour, and a book of Superfood recipes.

Leicester welcomes its first vegan market

Leicester Vegan

For the first time ever, Leicester will be hosting a vegan market held in the historic outdoor market on the 12-June from 11am – 3pm.

It’s actually quite surprising this is our first vegan market considering Leicester is the home of the original vegan – Donald Watson. Leicester is also considered by many as the vegetarian capital of the UK, and a city that is becoming increasingly more vegan-friendly by the day.

With this in mind, the Leicester Vegan Community have put together an event where vegans and the vegan-curious can taste, try out and purchase products that abstain from using animals from businesses with a strong vegan ethos. The event isn’t just about the customer; Leicester Vegan Community would also like to help launch new vegan businesses. The fair will give entrepreneurs the face to face exposure that is so lacking in online trade today and open up new opportunities for…

World Meat Free Day

Photo0045So, what’s World Meat Free Day? It’s simple, experts say that by 2050 the world’s population is set to increase to over 9 billion people*. That’s 30% higher than today. If we don’t make any changes to our diet by then, the increase in meat production is forecast to reach 200 million tonnes**. This demand simply cannot be met. So, could YOU go meat free just for one day on the 13th June, so you can see not only the impact it can have on your health and the environment, but also how delicious and easy it can be, so that you consider going meat free more often in the future.

At Hornett Wholefoods of course we know how delicious going meat free can be, our shop is 100% meat free and we want to give everybody the opportunity to sample meat free alternatives.  So, on World Meat Free Day, come and get some tasty food and some info, ideas and recipies; we’re even giving away free hot drinks too.  Also our ‘guess the beans’ competition will be on, so you could even win a meat free hamper!

Here’s why even giving up meat for just one meal is good for the planet and you:

  • Enough carbon emissions to boil a kettle 388 times
  • The daily water usage of nine people
  • Up to 11g of fat, equivalent to two whole teaspoons of butter
  • Up to 90 calories, about as much as two rich tea biscuits

To find out more pop into our shop, call 01933 741798, visit our facebook event page or go the World Meat Free Day website.

*The United Nations (UN) recently released population projections based on data until 2012 and a Bayesian probabilistic methodology. Analysis of this data reveals that, contrary to previous literature, the world population is unlikely to stop growing this century. There is an 80% probability that the world population, now 7.2 billion people, will increase to between 9.6 billion and 12.3 billion in 2100. This uncertainty is much smaller than the range from the traditional UN high and low variants. Much of the increase is expected to happen in Africa, in part due to higher fertility rates and a recent slowdown in the pace of fertility decline. Also the ratio of working-age people to older people is likely to decline substantially in all countries, even those that currently have young populations.

Bim the Beekeeper from Barby brought 17 of these pots of gold, from his bee hives next to the canal and moorings in Barby, Northamptonshire (click to see the hives)  Bim said “the bees loved it last spring, the weather was perfect, the fields were full of oil seed rape and we had a bumper harvest; this spring honey is lovely”

We also have our summer honey in stock.  This is a favourite with our customers, with many coming from miles around to get it. So, which ever you choose, come and get them because they are sure to be selling fast. Enjoy!
