Anyone coming into the shop will see me ‘modelling’ the Dark Tulip colour darktulip– normally £3.45 a pot but for two days only, you can purchase a pot for just £3.10 with the 10% off. This is a range of super bright hair colours that aren’t tested on animals and are suitable for use by vegetarians and vegans as it doesn’t have any nasty hidden animal-based ingredients. They work best on bleached or blonde hair but that doesn’t mean those with dark hair can’t use them – you’ll just have a ‘hint’ of the colour.

Lazy Day Foods’ Millionaire’s Shortbread

So it’s suitable for vegans and coeliacs. It’s normally £3.25 for a 150g box which holds 5 pieces but for today and tomorrow, you can buy a pack for just £2.92 with our 10% off offer. It’s already a really popular item in the shop and sells really well to those with allergies and those without – it really tastes good and you definitely wouldn’t know it had different ingredients. The shortbread is really crumbly and I was a little disappointed to get to the end of the bit I had!

“Millionaires Shortbread has a delicious shortbread base spread with a thick, smooth layer of golden caramel. Topping the product off (is) a crisp layer of Belgian dark chocolate.”

Vego chocolate bar

vego trio centredIt’s Mr Hornett Wholefoods’ birthday today so he’s asked for his new favourite chocolate bar to be featured for a couple of days – I’m happy to oblige, of course.

I added this to the stock after a customer came in and raved about it and it’s easy to see why! It’s a huge bar for £3.25 (£2.92 after 10% off) – it has 5 big chunks of chocolate in the bar, each roughly an inch wide and full of whole hazelnuts. It happily fed 4 of us at home as a pudding, with the kids sharing the last bit while Mr H looked on hungrily!

Booja Booja chocolates


When we were deciding what to sell in the shop, Booja Booja chocolates were definitely near the top of the list. It’s hard to imagine where to start with how good they are: tasty, luxurious, dairy- and gluten-free, organic and good looking and now they have 10% off – just in time for Valentine’s day! The Fine de Champagne Truffles are usually £12.95 for a 138g box (12 chocolates), which makes them £11.66 a box for a couple of days. We also have 3 flavours from the Four Corners collection: Hazelnut, Stem Ginger and Banoffee Toffee; these are £6.99 for a 104g box (9 truffles), or £6.29 during the two days they’re in Fab Feb.

Chopped Tomatoes

Suma ch. toms picAnd now we come to the one item I can’t manage without in my kitchen; I use these in all sorts of things. A 400g tin of organic Chopped Tomatoes from Hornett Wholefoods normally costs 75p; with 10% off for 48 hours, it costs just 68p – bargain! You can use them in:

  •  Spaghetti Bolognese
  • Curry (including my chickpea and spinach recipe from 5th February)
  • Soup
  • Risotto
  • Pasta sauces
  • Casseroles
  • Etc, etc…

Spicy Tomato Soup

  • 1 tin of Organic Chopped Tomatoes
  • A handful of white basmati rice (500g – £1.95)
  • 1 tsp crushed chillies (25g – 89p)
  • 1 tsp mixed herbs (20g – 89p)
  • 2 tbsp of Organic Sweetcorn (340g – £1.25)
  1. Put the tomatoes in a medium sized pan; fill the empty can with water and add to the tomatoes. Add the chillies and herbs and bring to the boil.
  2. Once it’s boiling, add the rice and stir occasionally to stop the rice sticking to the pan. Turn down to a simmer.
  3. When the rice is cooked (after about 20 minutes; the tomatoes make the cooking process a little longer), add the sweetcorn. You only need to warm them through, so serve after a couple of minutes with a wholemeal roll.

Plamil Orange Chocolate Spread

The Plamil Chocolate Spread range is really popular and is a vegan alternative to chocolate spread; it also has no hydrogenated oils so is healthier than most other mainstream brands. A 275g jar is reduced by 10% to £2.53 from its usual price of £2.81 for two days during Fab Feb at Hornett Wholefoods! The Plamil website describes Chocolate Orange Spread as “Absolutely divine; hide the jar for yourself!” Try it – you’ll love it!

Choc orange spreadWhat are hydrogenated oils and why are they bad for us?
Hydrogenated fat isn’t technically a saturated fat, so it looks OK on the label. But it is actually vegetable oil blasted with hydrogen so that it behaves like saturated fat.The hydrogen makes the fat harder, which is why it sticks to your arteries. It’s also why it’s solid at room temperature (mono and polyunsaturated fats are usually oils). This solidity is desirable for food manufacturers as it adds substance and body to the product, whereas the healthier oils make things too squidgy and oily to the touch.

A brief look at how hydrogenated oil is made will show that it cannot be conducive to health:

1 Vegetable oil is mixed thoroughly with fine particles of nickel or copper.
2. It is then heated to a very high temperature (about 200 degrees celsius) and held at that heat for 6 hours.
3. Meanwhile, hydrogen gas is pumped through the mixture at high pressure, and then the excited hydrogen atoms penetrate the vegetable oil molecules and chemically change them into ‘transfats’ (‘trans fatty acids’). These are new, complex substances that are not found in nature, except at low levels in some animal fats.
4. The mixture is then cooled down to form tiny hard plastic-like beads. These hard beads are known as ‘hydrogenated oil’.

Tinned Chickpeas

chick peas trioI love chickpeas and I always have some in the cupboard, ready to add to all sorts of meals.  A tin from Hornett Wholefoods costs only 59p anyway, but with 10% off for two days, it will cost 53p! My favourite chickpea recipe is spinach and chickpea curry. It’s super simple, especially when you have frozen spinach in the freezer. Of course, you can also buy dried chickpeas and soak and cook them but the tinned version is so much more convenient!  Combine with a few other yummy bits for a lovely meal:

Quick Spinach and Chickpea Curry

  •  1 tin of Chickpeas, drained
  • 350g frozen spinach, defrosted and drained
  • ½ tin of chopped tomatoes (400g – 75p)
  • 2 tbsp Balti Curry Paste (Geo Organics – 182g – £2.19)
  • 1 tbsp mixed herbs (20g – 89p)
  • 1/2 tsp bouillon (Marigold -150g – £1.89)

Just the one instruction – put all the ingredients in a pan and heat it! The spinach has a lot of moisture in it so you shouldn’t need any more liquid than this. Serve with rice or bulgur wheat. If you’re feeling indulgent, have a naan bread on the side aswell.

Chickpea and spinach curryWhat’s a chickpea anyway?

The chickpea or chick pea (Cicer arietinum) is a legume.

Mature chickpeas can be cooked and eaten cold in salads, cooked in stews, ground into a flour called gram flour (also known as chickpea flour and besan and used frequently in Indian cuisine), ground and shaped in balls and fried as falafel, stirred into a batter and baked to make farinata or panelle.

Hummus is the Arabic word for chickpeas, which are often cooked and ground into a paste and mixed with tahini (sesame seed paste).

Dried chickpeas need a long cooking time (1–2 hours) but will easily fall apart when cooked longer. If soaked for 12–24 hours before use, cooking time can be shortened by around 30 minutes.

chickpeasChickpeas are a nutrient dense food, providing rich content of protein, dietary fibre, folate and certain dietary minerals, such as iron and phosphorus. Chickpeas have a Protein Digestibility Corrected Amino Acid Score of about 76% which is higher than fruits, vegetables, many other legumes and cereals.

Suma Jumbo Oats

Jumbo oatsJumbo Oats is one of our more popular products in the shop so I’m delighted to offer them at 10% off for 48 hours from today. A big 1kg box normally costs £2.25; with 10% off, they come to just £2.02. We always have some in the house as they’re a good, quick option at all times of the day and so versatile. Here’s a couple of recipes, one savoury, one sweet.

Mince crumble
• 500g TVP (250g – £1.19 x2)
• 1 large onion, chopped
• 3 tbsp vegan Worcestershire sauce (Biona – 140ml – £2.99)
• 75g olive spread (500g – £1.95)
• 125g flour (Dove’s Farm GlutenFree – 1kg – £2.25)
• 75g regular or jumbo rolled oats
• 75g mature hard cheese e.g. Cheddar, grated
1. Preheat the oven to 200oC, gas mark 6.
2. Rehydrate the TVP. Fry the onion in a large saucepan and fry for 5 minutes. Add the Worcestershire sauce, TVP and seasoning and fry for a further 5 minutes, covered. Transfer to an ovenproof serving dish.
3. Rub the spread into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the oats and cheese, season to taste.
4. Sprinkle over the mince and bake for 20-25 minutes.

Serve with fresh vegetables.
Try adding some peas or frozen mixed vegetables to the mix.

This unbaked, dairy-free flapjack is from Alice Meller, wife of Gill, head chef at River Cottage. It’s now a firm favourite in our house. Makes 15-18.

100g dates, stoned (250g – £1.19)
100g prunes
2 ripe or slightly over-ripe medium bananas, peeled
150g honey (340g – £2.80)
2 tbsp coconut oil (650g – £11.95)
325g porridge oats or jumbo oats
100g raisins, currants or dried cranberries (Vine Fruit Mix – 500g – £3.05)
100g dried apricots, finely chopped (125g – £1.95)
25g each of shelled hemp seeds, linseeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds (or 100g of whichever seedy mix you like)

1.Put the dates, prunes, bananas, honey and coconut oil in the bowl of a food processor. Add two tablespoons of water and blitz the lot until you have a thick, fruit-flecked purée.
2.In a large bowl, combine the oats with the raisins, apricots and all the seeds. Stir in the puréed fruit mix and combine well.
3.Line a shallow baking tray, about 20cm x 30cm, with baking parchment or clingfilm. Tip in the fruity, oaty mixture and gently press it out as even and level as you can.
4.Transfer to the fridge for two to three hours, to set, then turn out and slice into bars. Keep the flapjacks in in a sealed Tupperware box in the fridge.

Fruit and Seed Loaf

Today marks our one month anniversary – go us! I’m celebrating with cake, sort of. I’ve picked Ugg foods – Fruit and Seed Loaf. It has 10% off for 48 hours…

Fruit loaf displayThis is a ready-mixed pack and is suitable for:

  • Gluten- free diets
  • Paleo (non-grain) diets
  • Vegan diets
  • Those with soya allergies

A 470g bag costs £6.95, or £6.25 with 10% off and all you have to do is rip open the bag and add eggs (or egg replacer), 2 apples and olive oil or water. Cook it for 80 minutes in a moderate oven then it’s ready to serve toasted with olive oil spread and a little jam. (There are full instructions on the pack!) It’s really tasty!

Paleo is short for paleolithic and is also referred to as the caveman diet (hence the brand above – “ugg” and their logo is a caveman…) or hunter-gatherer diet. Proponents of the diet therefore recommend avoiding any foods that they claim were not available to humans at that time, including dairy products, grains, legumes, processed oils, and refined sugar. The diet is high in protein and fibre and has fewer carbohydrates.
